What are actors doing when they aren’t on stage? I have several friends at the beginning of their theatrical careers in New York. They spend a lot of time going to auditions and eventually get cast, but most of their time is spent doing other things – such as working an unrelated job. My work shows a seldom addressed perspective of actors; actors as they truly are - themselves, resilient in the face of uncertainty. Following my subjects for months, they behave as if nobody is watching and become their authentic selves.
MIKLATIM (2019) מקלטים
Bomb shelters (מקלטים) is a series about exactly that. When I first went to Israel in 2019, I noticed many different types of bomb shelters hiding in plain sight - synagogues, hotel meeting rooms, bus stops. The Israeli public is subject to a threat of aerial attack that many places have long forgotten.
I had read about the Israeli town of Sderot, located just one kilometer from Gaza. Sderot has the highest number of bomb shelters per capita of any place on earth. I had read that many shelters were covered in graffiti and art, and I decided to take a bus the next morning from Tel Aviv. This was the beginning of MIKLATIM (bomb shelters). I plan to return to Israel and continue the series, traveling across the country and finding more interesting (and unusual) shelters.
